At halftime it looked like we were watching a rerun of week one, but Buffalo came out scrappy in the second half and held the Chargers to only three points in the final 30 minutes. Josh Allen drove Buffalo down the field in their first drive of the second half which ended with a Chris Ivory one-yard touchdown run. The score seemed to ignite the home crowd and the Buffalo defense, leading to three-and-outs on the Chargers next three drives. However, the 28-3 halftime deficit was just too much for the Bills to overcome. LeSean McCoy would exit the game and not return after he suffered a rib injury in the third quarter when one of his own lineman fell on top of him at the end of a play. Hopefully it isn’t serious, but it certainly didn’t look good.
Allen may have not won the game, but he showed promise throughout. At times he certainly looked like a rookie – especially the under thrown ball to Jason Croom that resulted in a costly fourth quarter interception – but other times he looked like a poised veteran standing strong in the pocket throwing darts down field. Allen was able to throw his first NFL touchdown with 38 seconds left in the fourth quarter when he hit wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin with a bullet from three yards out.
Going 0-2 is never fun and a week three matchup in Minnesota next week will be even tougher, but hopefully the second half momentum the Bills were able to generate will continue next week against the Vikings.
