LeSean McCoy spoke publicly Thursday for the first time since being accused of assault by his ex-girlfriend, Delicia Cordon. McCoy stated, “It’s an open investigation, so I’ll leave it at that. That’s going on right now, but my main focus is here and my teammates, my team, trying to build [us] together at camp, to reach a goal together, and that’s a championship.” He refused to answer any questions directly related to the investigation but stressed that he is confident that he will play and is anxious to put the allegations behind him.
Coach Sean McDermott and GM Brandon Beane shared this confidence. Beane commented, “LeSean’s here and we’re letting the investigators handle all of that. We’ve done our due diligence and it’s in their hands. He’s ready to roll.”
Many are concerned that McCoy could land on the commissioner’s exempt list, in which McCoy would not be allowed to participate in team activities until the investigation ceases. Neither McDermott nor Beane seemed to think that will be the case. “We’ve communicated with them [the NFL] and we feel comfortable that LeSean’s going to be here…we don’t see that changing,” said McDermott.
Aside from the allegations, McCoy shared that he has cut 13 pounds since the spring and trained with running backs Frank Gore, Todd Gurley, and Le’Veon Bell during the offseason. He said that the veteran Gore helped him stay in shape to be effective and productive during the season and is helping McCoy prolong his career.
Bills fans have to be a bit relieved after hearing McDermott’s and Beane’s confident remarks regarding McCoy’s situation. Buffalo is ready to move on and hope that Shady can continue to be the focal point of the Bills offense.
