Wardrobe Editing 101: Your Guide to a Successful Wardrobe Detox

Closet Detox GuideAs much I wish summer wasn’t over, Fall is officially underway and that means a change in wardrobe selections.  A seasonal turnover is the perfect time to do a big examination and rid your closet of anything that is taking up space. Usually twice a year, before a new season (F/W and S/S), take a look at what’s accumulated in your closet and do some wardrobe editing.  If you want your wardrobe to be a reflection of your personal style aesthetic, then you are going to love this process! Just think about all of the items in your closet that you don’t necessarily like, haven’t worn in years or just can’t fit anymore. How can you truly express yourself if nothing in your closet represents your personal style?

Wardrobe detoxing can be very essential in helping you maintain a wardrobe that best fits you. Once you’ve detoxified your closet you may feel that you have a lot less clothes, but you’ll be left with items you love and feel good in.  You will have a clearer perspective on what you’re working with, and won’t feel like you have nothing to wear. In addition, you’ll be able to make better choices of what needs to be added to your wardrobe.

For those of you who have never done this before, below are some helpful tips to get you started! Be sure to set aside a good amount of time for this task.  You can also break your closet into sections if you don’t want to go all in at once, and rather focus on a certain item category a day (ex. pants/shorts, tops, dresses, etc.).

Tip #1

Be sure to have a clean room because it’s going to get a little messy, and you’ll have clothes everywhere. Wear something simple that you can easily take off to try on clothes.

Tip#2

Get trash bags for items that will be thrown away.  Get 3 storage containers/boxes and label them with ‘Alter/Customize’, ‘Giveaway/Sell’ and ‘Maybe’.

Tip#3

Select and item category (like skirts or blouses) and place everything in your closet belonging to that category your bed or the floor. Now you want to get down to the nitty gritty. Examine every item in this category (I suggest trying items on for better decision making) and put them into one of the places listed below.

Trash Bag

Throw anything away that is worn, stained, ripped and too damaged to give away.

Alter/Customize

Place items in this pile if they need minor repairs such as buttons or a zipper fixed. Also place items in this pile that you like, but may need to be tailored. If the cost to get it tailored is more than replacing it, just replace it. Items you can customize for fun DIY projects can also be placed in this pile.

Maybe

These are items in good condition that you’re not sure if you want to keep them or not.

Giveaway/Sell

Items in this pile should be items that you haven’t worn in a very long time, and don’t plan on wearing anymore.  If you haven’t worn it in the past year, consider it gone. Someone else may be able to get more wear out of it. If you have multiple of the same item (like 10 flannel shirts), narrow it down to 3 and put the rest in this pile.

Back to Closet

Anything that you love to wear and look/feel good in deserves to go back in your closet!

Repeat steps with every item category in your closet!

***POST DETOX

- Throw trash bags away

- Put items in the ‘Maybe’ pile under your bed somewhere or in storage for a while. If you don’t miss them, give them away. If there are items you decide you can’t live without, add them back to your closet.

- Get ‘Alter/Customize’ items tailored and repaired. Do some fun DIY projects with the ones you want to customize.

- Organize your newly refreshed wardrobe and make a list of what additions you need to buy.

I’d love to get your thoughts and comments on how this process worked for you!
