Justin Timberlake was everything you thought he would be – charming, funny, and friendly – but he isn’t giving to much away about his plans for the Super Bowl LII Halftime Show.
“Without giving too much away, we’re doing a few things with this Halftime Show that we’ve never quite done before. I always like to push to be able to do something like that. On a more serious note, it’s a moment where you have the opportunity to bring so many people together through music. So that has been the inspiration behind putting the set list together, managing the visuals, and how it will all sort of come together.
A multi-talented actor and musician, Timberlake has won ten Grammys and numerous other awards. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, he rapidly became a highly respected musician, winning two Grammys for his debut solo album, “Justified.” He’s been recognized for a range of performances, including Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, Best Pop Vocal Album, Best Dance Recording and Best Music Video. Timberlake was most recently nominated for an Academy Award® for the song “CAN’T STOP THE FEELING!” from the film TROLLS for which he won his 10th Grammy.
As a matter of fact, his latest Grammy winning song is the one thing he was willing to mention, “odds are there will be a little Can’t Stop The Feeling but that’s all I’m giving away. Don’t even try it.”
Timberlake joins an esteemed list of recent halftime acts including Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Madonna, The Who, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Prince, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, U2 and more.
With the Super Bowl being in Prince’s hometown of Minneapolis, Timberlake touched on how he has impacted his music. “Prince is a huge influence on me. It seems braggadocios to say – but I’m going to say it anyway – the time that I got to spend around him talking about music…those are memories I’ll take with me forever. It feels nice to be here.”
“The estate that manages his godliness was nice enough — we’re doing a listening party (for Filthy] tonight at Paisley Park. I’m pinching myself,” said Timberlake. “There’s a lot of bucket list things that are happening this week for me, and that’s definitely at the top of the list as well. I get to come back and be onstage at the Super Bowl, but to top it off I get to walk the hallowed, sacred ground of Paisley Park tonight and get to play my new album. That didn’t even seem like a possibility to me a year ago.”
Justin did take a moment to steer away from music to address a question about whether or not his son will play football.
“Uh, he will never play football. No, no,” stated Timberlake. “It’s kind of like that thing where my main objective is that he become a great person. And if he wants to get into the arts or sports, then yeah, I would fully support that. I think I can hopefully offer him some advice on what to do and what not to do, so yeah, but right now we’re working on our manners. That’s a big deal in our house right now. It’s like, one thing at a time.”
This will be Timberlake’s third time performing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, giving him the distinction of having the most appearances by an individual entertainer. He previously performed at Super Bowls XXXV and XXXVIII.
“I like making dance music. So I just hope everyone watching the show is dancing. I think that’s the best thing anyone can do to express joy.”
