Super Bowl 51 is only a day away, so we kicked off the real Super Bowl weekend with the 18th annual Super Bowl Gospel Celebration(SBGC). The star- studded event was held at Lakewood Church, one the largest churches in the country owned by preacher and televangelist, Joel Osteen. A combination of athletes and celebrities joined together for a night of praise, worship, and inspiration. This is the event where faith and football meets.
Rennie Curran, former NFL linebacker, author and motivational speaker told us what he thinks about combining faith and football, “faith is everything, you really can’t have one without the other.” In the NFL your career is never promised, one wrong move and your career can be over.”It doesn’t matter how much I train, how big or strong I get I have to know what matters most, and that is my relationship with Christ”, says Curran. Being the offspring of Liberian immigrants, Curran says his parents are his biggest inspiration and his daughter being his biggest motivation.
Michael Ray Garvin, wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals, also attended the event. Garvin knows because of his faith he wouldn’t be in the position that he’s in and with this platform he has the opportunity to pass the word of God on to others. It is super bowl weekend, so the question of the night is, who are you rooting for? Garvin is rooting for the Patriots while Curran is rooting for the Falcons, even though he would have rather watched the Cowboys take home the win.
The concert will air on BET and Centric TV on February 5, 2017 at 11:00 AM ET/CT (special will re-air at 11:00 PM ET/CT).
