‘Mighty Mia’ Inspires Colts’ Matt Overton

Overton plays special teams, long snapper and kick off specialist for the Colts. Although long snapper is not the most glorifying position in football, Overton remembers how tough he had to fight to achieve his dream and remains inspired to keep fighting by his new friend, and biggest fan.

Mia Benge is a 15-year old Indiana native who is currently battling a brain tumor. Mia and her favorite Colts player Matt Overton have become close friends over the last few months.

When Overton first met Mia, nurses told him that she was one of the sickest kids in Indiana, so sick that at times they didn’t believe Mia would make it. Overton has visited Mia at Riley Hospital for Child throughout the summer and into the 2013 NFL season. He draws motivation and inspiration from her daily battles.

“She’s an inspiration to me and so many kids. Mia’s story really spread a lot of hope throughout Riley (Hospital), not many kids get to leave the ICU as quickly as she did,” said Riley. “Fortunately enough Mia and I have crossed paths and become friends. It’s my way of giving back and I really enjoy spending time with her and her family.”

Mia has her own Facebook page, Mighty Mia, where you can follow her progress, draw inspiration from her determination and find pictures of her spending time with her favorite player. Overton decorates his locker every week with a Mighty Mia sticker to remind himself of the fight his young friend is enduring.

“She’s a fighter, she fights everyday and all the kids I’ve met from Riley, they’re just an inspiration to so many people. If I can take a few minutes of the day to spend time with them that means the world to them,” said Overton.

Overton continues to be a presence in Mia’s life throughout the NFL season, as he accompanied Mia as she was recognized on her high school homecoming court.

“Small gestures really go a long way,” said Overton.

Overton has taken steps far beyond small gestures to help support Mia in her battle, and he has built a true friendship with one Mighty girl.
