Phillip Rivers led the San Diego Chargers to a thrilling upset victory in Denver Thursday night, as they defeated the mighty Peyton Manning and his Broncos 27-10.
With a win Thursday the Bronco’s had a chance to get closer to take the AFC west title and gain top seeding in the conference. However, the Chargers had different plans.
Peyton manning came out slinging in the first quarter as the Broncos shot out with a 10-3 lead. Manning ended the game passing 27/41 with 289 yards and two touchdowns to Andre Caldwell, who was Denver’s hot receiver tonight with two touchdowns off of six receptions and 59 yards. The duo would not stay on the field very long however as their time of possession on the field was only 21:11 compared to the 38:49 TOP that the Chargers had.
The Bolts are storming their way back into the playoff race with mammoth wins over Kansas City three weeks ago and Denver on Thursday. After having a slow 4-6 start to the season, San Diego has won three of its last four games. The charge has been lead by quarterback Phillip Rivers who went 12/20 Thursday night, with 166 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Perhaps the game changer was when Phillip Rivers threw a 19-yard exhilarating touchdown pass to WR Keenan Allen who hurdled a Bronco defender and bulldozed his way into the end zone. Allen finished the night with two touchdowns and 29 yards.
San Diego needs to win their next two games to stay in the playoff picture. While it may be tough they still have a chance as they face off against the Oakland Raiders next week and take on the Kansas City Chiefs the week after. As for the Broncos, they need to win out to ensure a division title. Denver will finish off their season with road games in Houston and Oakland. The mighty AFC west will come down to the wire and three teams hope to swoop their way into the playoff battle.
