On Sunday, the San Francisco 49ers recognized WR Kassim Osgood, youth football coach for the Coastside Cougars, Breen Hofmann, and the non-profit organization, StandUp for Kids in the seventh annual 49ers Perry/Yonamine Unity award. The award is named after former 49ers players, Joe “The Jet” Perry and Wally Yonamine and is given to a current 49er’s player, a Bay Area youth football coach, and a local non-profit organization that shown exceptional commitment to promoting unity within their team and community.
The San Francisco 49ers Foundation will be contributing $10,000 to the JW House of Santa Clara on behalf of Osgood, Hofmann, and the StandUp for Kids organization. The JW House of Santa Clara is an organization that helps keep families together during medical crisis by offering a welcome home close to the hospital. They are also there to provide a good environment and hope for the families that are going through the medical crisis. The award to the 49er player is decided upon with the players and coaches a selection committee goes over applications for the youth football coach, as well as the non-profit organization.
Kassim Osgood was selected because of his leadership shown on the team and the impact he has had on the community as a positive role model. Osgood recently was at a JW House event. He was playing board games, making root beer floats, and just spending time with the families that are affiliated with the house. The selection of Osgood was met with an abundance of support from the entire San Francisco 49er locker room.
Coach Breen Hofmann was selected because of the leadership he has shown as the coach to kids in Half Moon Bay. Hofmann’s dedication to the kids as well as the families to make sure every child can play football has shown what great lengths he is willing to go to. The San Francisco 49ers were happy to recognized Coach Hofmann with the award because of his continuous and endless efforts to unite his entire community.
StandUp for Kids is a non-profit organization that has a goal to end the cycle of homelessness for the youth across the United States. They provide a center for homeless youths to shower, eat, and take advantage of various other amenities for two nights a week. They also provide a mentorship program to help guide the youth in a positive direction in life by helping them establish and reach their goals, as well as reaffirm their self-sufficiency. Since they are a non-profit organization, their $10,000 grant will help them fund bus passes and cell phones to the troubled youth and will help them towards their current goal of having the center open 5 nights a week.
The San Francisco 49er Foundation is a non-profit community funding extension of the San Francisco 49ers and was founded in 1992. They support developing programs and programs that help undeserved youths to keep them, “Safe, On Track, and In School”. To date the organization has donated over 26 million to non-profit organizations and in 2013, they donated approximately 3.3 million to non-profit organizations alone.
