Panthers Re-Sign QB Webb

The Carolina Panthers have re-signed quarterback Joe Webb to a one-year contract, the team announced Monday.

“It’s great to be back.” Webb said. “We had a great run with the way we finished the season and it felt like home. Everyone had great team chemistry and it felt like a big family. I didn’t know if I could get that somewhere else. I’m excited to keep working with Cam (Newton) and D.A. (Derek Anderson) with Coach (Ken) Dorsey coaching us up.”

Webb, 6-4 and 230 pounds, returns to Carolina for his second season after originally signing with the team as an unrestricted free agent in 2014. Last season, Webb served as a backup quarterback and also saw action at wide receiver and on special teams. Webb played in seven regular season games, totaling one catch for 16 yards and one tackle on special teams. He saw action on special teams in both postseason games for Carolina, adding a special teams tackle.

“Joe gives us continuity at the quarterback position,” head coach Ron Rivera said. “He is also a very versatile player. Not only has he played quarterback, but he has played wide receiver and on special teams, and gives us some depth there because of his athleticism and intelligence. We are very excited for him to continue to be part of what we’re trying to build here.”

Prior to joining Carolina, Webb spent four seasons (2010-13) with the Minnesota Vikings, seeing action at quarterback and wide receiver after being selected by the Vikings in the sixth round (199th overall) in the 2010 NFL Draft out of UAB. In five NFL seasons, Webb played in 40 regular season games with four starts (two at quarterback and two at wide receiver). He has completed 88-of-152 passes for 853 yards and three touchdowns with five interceptions, and added seven receptions for 58 yards. He has rushed 41 times for 273 yards and four touchdowns, and returned four kickoffs for 92 yards. He has played in three career postseason games, including a start at quarterback for Minnesota in 2012.
