The Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Sports Awards is an award show like no other – one that gives the kids (also known as some of the most intense screaming fans) a spot in the front row and not the athletes. The 2nd annual adrenaline-packed awards show was hosted by Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, who also took home awards for Best Cannon and King of Swag.
Thursday night, following the heels of an emotional ESPYS, we hit the orange carpet to ask some of the biggest, best and bravest athletes some very personal questions. Talking to these elite athletes about important things like cartoons and super powers is pretty much the best thing ever.
And when wardrobes include a custom-made Rugrats button-down shirt like Pistons Andre Drummond or hearing Warriors Center Festus Ezeli confess he uses his younger siblings as an excuse to watch cartoons, but it’s really him always turning it on, it makes the night that much better.
What do you miss most about being a kid?
Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors): Nap time!
Festus Ezeli (Golden State Warriors): No responsibilities, no bills – you get to play all day and watch Nickelodeon all day.
Marcedes Lewis (Jacksonville Jaguars): Not having bills and being able to come home from school and just chill out and not have to worry about grown people stuff.
Greg Jennings (Miami Dolphins): Not having to worry about responsibilities and naps! Naps are the essential to a good day.
Jason Verrett (San Diego Chargers): I never got a chance to be out here and do what I’m doing right now, so I’m definitely excited to seeing all the kids out here having fun.
Andre Drummond (Detroit Pistons): Being able to get away with stuff.
Marvin Jones Jr. (Cincinnati Bengals): You have no worries – you could basically do whatever you want and eat whatever you want, whenever you want.
Tito Ortiz (MMA Fighter): No responsibilities.
Candace Parker (WNBA Los Angeles Sparks): I miss stuff like this. I mean the excitement, the ability to have energy for days and just go out in the hot sun and play – obviously being a kid is about being fun.
Malcolm Butler (New England Patriots): I’m going to say riding the bus.
If you could have one super hero power, what would you pick?
Festus Ezeli: Super speed. I’m not sure if it’s PG to say x-ray vision?
Greg Jennings: To get everyone to smile.
Jason Verrett: To fly.
Tito Ortiz: I guess I am a super hero to my kids. I’ve got a strong heart and a strong mind. But really, I’d love to fly. I’ve always had that dream.
Candace Parker: I would fly.
If you could slime any anyone?
Marcedes Lewis: Rob Gronkowski.
Jason Verrett: Probably my brother, just because we’ve bumped heads so many times I guess I could relieve some stress on him!
Andre Drummond: Either Jim Calhoun, my college coach, or Stan Van Gundy, my coach now.
Marvin Jones Jr.: My position coach. He’d probably try to get back at me, but it’s all fun and games.
Tito Ortiz: I’d slime a friend of mine… Dwayne Johnson, just to see his reaction. I know he’s a big tough guy too so to see what his reaction would be underneath it.
Candace Parker: My husband!
Malcolm Butler: My position coach Josh Boyer – he gives me a headache sometimes, so I think he needs a little pay back.
We also chatted with Utah Girls Tackle Football League running back and YouTube sensation Sam Gordon.
Pro Players Insider: Usually I have questions for adults so I’m going to swap it – what’s the one thing you are most looking forward to doing as an adult?
Sam: I want to play soccer with the USWNT and win an Olympic gold medal and a World Cup.
PPI: Do you have a favorite player?
S: Alex Morgan and Abby Wambach, but the whole team is just amazing.
PPI: If you could slime any adult…?
S: My dad!
The awards show included some awesome antics from celebs and athletes, like Mo’ne Davis blasting baseballs at a blimp sitting on top of Nick Cannon’s head trying to crack the blimp. Other events included members of the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team racing tricycles around a track against top NBA players (as usual, the ladies dominated yet again), and NBA’s Carmelo Anthony attempting to get a Guinness World Record for most high-fives in a 30-second span (he failed). Host Russell Wilson and MLB icon Derek Jeter were among those in attendance to be slimed (Jeter was doused in gold slime as a tribute to his Legend Award) on stage.
Thursday night was evidence that no matter how determined and focused these mega-sports stars are on the field, they are still big kids at heart.
