Wade Phillips to Interview for Denver Bronco’s Defensive Coordinator Job

Wade Phillips is expected to meet today with the Denver Broncos about their open defensive coordinator posistion according to various reports.

Phillips, 67, last coached the Houston Texans defense under new Bronco’s head coach Gary Kubiak during the 2011-13 NFL seasons. He was out of the NFL coaching ranks last year, the first time that has occurred since 1975.

Phillips inherited a defense with the Texans that was ranked 30th in the league. During the next three seasons, Houston turned into a top-seven unit in each of his three years with the the team.

Kubiak’s top choice for the opening was Cincinnati Bengals defensive backs coach Vance Joseph, but he is still under contract for one more season and the Bengals have refused to allow him out of his contract to advance with other teams.

Phillips, who is certainly fimiliar with Kubiak and was John Elway’s coach for a season in 1993-94 would certainly prove to be a good fall back option. He is an excellent defensive mind and has seen just about everything in his almost 40 years in the league.

He would be a great fit with the already talented roster that the Broncos posess on that side of the ball.
