Eden Prairie, MN (November 18, 2015) – Following his sixth career multi-interception game, Vikings CB Terence Newman was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Vikings 30-14 victory at Oakland.
With interceptions in the first and fourth quarters of Sunday’s win, Newman joined Pro Football Hall of Fame CB Deion Sanders as the only cornerbacks at age 37 or older to have multiple interceptions in a game. He currently ranks 3rd among all active players with 39 career interceptions (Charles Woodson, 65; DeAngelo Hall, 43).
In addition to the pair of takeaways, Newman also recorded a career-high 5 passes defensed, which tie the NFL’s single-game high during the 2015 season. He also chipped in 4 tackles in the Vikings fifth-consecutive win.
This marks the second time in the 13-year veteran’s career that he has won this award, with his first coming after a three interception performance at Washington (12/14/03) during his rookie season in 2003.
Newman is the third straight Viking to win an NFC player of the week award, joining Marcus Sherels (Special Teams, at Chicago, 11/1) and Linval Joseph (Defensive, vs. St. Louis, 11/8).
The Salina, Kan., native becomes the first Vikings defensive back to win the award since 2010 when Antoine Winfield earned the honors following a Week 16 game at Philadelphia.
