The Baltimore Ravens have named cornerback Lardarius Webb to be their winner of the Ed Block Courage Award. Webb was named the award winner after a vote was taken by the team. The Ed Block Courage Award is one of the esteemed honers bestowed upon an NFL player. Webb has gone out of his way to impact the community in Baltimore. His foundation has teamed with the United Way to help underprivileged children and their families.
The Ed Block Courage Award is meant to honor players “who exemplify commitments to the principles of sportsmanship and courage.” Recipients of the award symbolize professionalism, strength and dedication. Another requirement is to be a role model within the community. By winning this honor, Webb becomes an Ambassador of Courage for victims of abuse, violence and neglect. Webb’s foundation has made a commitment to helping abused children and families in crisis. The Lardarius Webb Foundation holds an annual celebrity softball game, football camps and bowling events all of which raise funds to support their cause.
Webb has fought through a nagging back injury this season. He missed most of training camp as he tried to recover. He also missed three regular season games this season. The cornerback position has been hit with many injuries but Webb avoided being placed on injured reserve and once again is a fixture in the secondary. He has even field some punts during the season. His teammates recognize the courage that it took to push through the injury and as a result, they voted him to be the Ed Block Courage Award.
This season is not the first time that Webb has persevered after an injury. He suffered a torn anterior cruciate lingament during the 2012 season and had to watch from the sideline as his teammates came together for “one last ride” with Ray Lewis and embarked upon a Super Bowl run. Webb is a leader in the locker room. He showed his team first mentality by restructuring his contract prior to this season to reduce his cap number under the salary cap this season. He agreed to allow the Ravens to convert $4 million of his $7.5 million base salary into a signing bonus. This reduced his salary-cap figure to $7.504 million which was a reduction of $3 million.
