Philip Rivers Leads San Diego Chargers Past Eagles

Michael Vick was spectacular. He was 24 out 37 for 428 yards and 2 touchdowns with no interceptions.Vick threw for a career-high 428 yards and added three touchdowns (two passing, one rushing). It was his 10th 300-yard passing game as an Eagle, tying Sonny Jurgensen for fourth in franchise history  and  his 36th career rushing touchdowns are sixth all-time among quarterbacks

Still this performance wasn’t enough to defeat the Chargers and the game ended with a final score: San Diego Chargers 33  Philadelphia Eagles 30.  In the end it was the Chargers day to soar as Rivers threw for three TDs and led the  Chargers to a game-winning field goal drive, outshining the Philadelphia Eagles’ high-powered offense in Chip Kelly’s home debut.

“I just thought every guy stepped up big. We felt like we got in a good rhythm and we felt like their defense was a little bit on the ropes. I think every skilled player stepped up big at some point every guy made plays when we needed them. It was gutty win and feels awesome to win one of these,” said Rivers.

The referee told Vick to leave the field during the second to last drive something Vick thought was costly but respected the refs decision.

“I was backup and standing, ready to play, the referee told me to come out.I won’t say I wasn’t hurt. I wasn’t ‘hurt, hurt’. If I am standing up I’m not hurt. I’m ready to go, but [the referee] said I had to come out for a play. I think that was unfortunate for my team, but [the referees] are doing their jobs, and I won’t try to negate any decision they try to make.”

DeSean Jackson amassed 193 receiving yards and a touchdown on a career-high nine receptions. It was Jackson’s second-highest receiving yardage total (210 at Dallas on 12/12/10) and included a 61-yard score . Jackson has five 150-yard receiving games, tying Tommy McDonald for the team record. It marked his 17th 100-yard game, tying McDonald for fourth in team history .Jackson’s 290 career receptions moved him into 10th on the Eagles all-time list.

Jackson had a lot of good but did get cited for unnecessary roughness penalty in the 4th quarter. Vick supported his teammate and thought Jackson would learn from tonight.

We all have to learn to just be professionals at all time, and keep our cool. Sometimes it’s tough to do, but we all one common goal to win the football game. Anything that doesn’t relate to that thinking is irrational thinking, He’ll think about it tonight. He will make a better decision next time.”

On the changes the new Eagles coaching staff has brought didn’t go unnoticed by  OLB Jarret Johnson, “It’s different than anything I’ve seen. It’s designed for the most part to get players in space and try to get those plays. It’s like every man for himself football. You just have to be disciplined to stay in your gap and cover your man and make a play when it’s your time to make it. They are trying to spread guys out and make plays. You can see on that one play, that long touchdown, one man got beat and there goes a touchdown. ”

Each of the teams had over 1,150 yards in the game. The Eagles have a short week preparing for the Chiefs for the Thursday Night game. Chargers next face the Titans on the 22nd.
