Chargers new Head Coach Mike McCoy is excited about the 2013 season.
McCoy has been labeled brilliant, is considered by some to be the best teacher to have, and it’s said he can work around with any QB. McCoy came to San Diego this offseason from Denver where he was the Offensive Coordinator and is remembered there as an incredible OC. He first coached Kyle Orton who was a gun slinger who McCoy coached to help him throw for over 4000 yards.
Fast forward a year to his work with Tim Tebow, where McCoy threw out his playbook and made a new one, and Tebow who took them to the playoffs. Last year he had Peyton Manning and we all know how that went.
At his most recent press conference McCoy was asked about how he feels having Phillip Rivers as his Quarterback. “I love Phillip, the thing I love about him is that he is a student of the game still in year 10, he’s dying to be the best and just wants every detail about every detail.” McCoy said that nothing has surprised him about being a HC that he loves being out there and sees the intensity in his player’s eyes. “One thing we have been trying to tell our players is that they have 16 opportunities to show that they are the best and we will help them get there but they are going to have to want it.”
McCoy said that he, new GM Tom Telesco, and Dean Spanos will all be sitting down and figuring out how and when they will be traveling this year so that they’re players are ready to go.
One free agent that has the Chargers coaches excited his CB Derek Cox. He played with the Jacksonville Jaguars last year and statistically was one of the best CB last season.
Cox had the whole media room laughing during his interview. “Man I’m loving Cali it’s a whole new experience, weather is great and I’m looking for a place on the beach. I’m going to live it up….conservatively of course hahaha.” Cox spoke about the difference from JAC to SD, “Man the expectation there is to win, I see Phillip and Weddle out here pissed off about a 7-9 record haha man we played hard but damn we only won 2 games, we would have taken 7 wins, but all joking aside I know what to expect this season.” He also had this to say about the leader of the defense, “Weddle is a leader every time I have a question he is patient and will sit down and will help me grasp every play and being out on that practice field with him is special because of his knowledge.”
Danny Woodhead was also at the conference and he was very appreciative of his new home. Woodhead was a Patriot last season and was one of the main reasons of why that team was so good. Patriots would have the ball on 3rd and 9 or 3rd and 3 it didn’t matter Woodhead would always make a huge play to keep the ball moving for the Patriots.
First off Woodhead wanted to give his condolences to the city of Boston. He was asked about what the biggest transition from NE to SD, “ Well moving all of my stuff, no but really I thought it was going to be getting to know my teammates but these guys texted me and emailed me when they heard I signed with SD so I am really lucky to have teammates like that.”
How is your relationship with Ryan Mathews? “Well, it’s really good we both believe in each other and will be helping and motivating each other to help the team win.”
Woodhead said, “The main thing we have to do is believe in each other and we will win games.”
It seems like everyone at Chargers Park is ready for this season to start. McCoy seems like he is a leader of men and is ready to lead his men into battle this upcoming season and show why he has the best team in the league.
