New England Patriots guard Logan Mankins agreed to a six-year deal today that will keep him in red, white, and blue for quite some time. Following a contract dispute last year in which he refused to sign his tender and missed half of the regular season an demanded a trade, it may surprise some that he would sign with the Patriots for such a long time.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft made public his intention to make Mankins a “Patriot for life” last week, and it seems he may have accomplished his goal as this contract will take Mankins into his mid-thirties. The two-time All Pro guard has started every game since his rookie season with the exception of his holdout last year.
Since being drafted out of Fresno State University as the last pick of the first round in 2005, Mankins has established himself as one of the league’s best offensive lineman. During his time on the Patriots, the number of sacks Tom Brady takes each season has seen career lows.
On a team that has one of the league’s most prolific passing attacks and one of the best quarterbacks ever, it is a necessity that there is a solid offensive line, and the Patriots have cemented their left guard in place for years to come with this deal.
Mankins will be a welcome face in the locker room and it is only fitting that he will spend the next six years in New England. Mankins is one of the tops OGs in football, and the signing is great news for the long-term stability of New England’s offensive line.
