Colorado’s underprivileged children gained a philanthropist as well as an athlete when the Denver Broncos signed pro-bowl safety, TJ Ward. Ward hosted his First Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament Monday July 13th at Blackstone Country Club with proceeds going to support the TJ Ward Foundation. Ward’s golf tournament was supported by his family as well as NFL players from all around the league. Denver Broncos David Bruton, Darian Stewart, Aqib Talib, and Jordan Norwood came out to play in their teammate’s charity.
Ward was also joined by other players in the NFL, including Ward’s former teammate Joe Haden of the Cleveland Browns. Haden flew in the night before with his wife Sara to play in the tournament because “it’s about giving back to each other’s foundations.” Haden was returning the favor to Ward who had gone to Cleveland last month to play in the Haden’s celebrity softball game. Also in attendance was Ward’s younger brother Terron Ward, Walter Thurmond, Tashaun Gipson, Mike Adams, Jacoby Ford, Austin Pettis, Eddie Pleasant, and Shareece Wright.
The TJ Ward foundation focuses on “the importance of education while also placing an important emphasis of physical fitness and health.” Ward credits his desire to give back to his mother, “growing up my mom always stressed the importance of giving back and helping others, so I was kinda bread with that my whole life. That’s why I started this foundation.”
TJ Ward started giving back in Cleveland and has continued that legacy by giving back to underprivileged children here in Denver. One group of kids were treated to a Denver Broncos football skills camp, while another group of Denver youth had the opportunity to learn sports journalism skills. The youth then practiced their interview skills on Denver Broncos TJ Ward and Aqib Talib. When asked about being interviewed by those kids, Ward’s excitement was palpable, “It was cool, real cool cause they had different questions. Ya know, kids have a different mindset, so all their questions were very different from what we get from the regular media. It was so cool”
