Calvin Johnson, Man or Machine?

This Sunday, Ford Field will once again become host to the great abilities of Calvin Johnson “Megatron” doing what he does best, making unbelievable plays while scoring on command. I think it’s safe to say that this 6’5’’, 236 pound “machine” will be delivering on all cylinders leading the once tame Lions who are now sitting at an eye opening (5-1) record, to a victory over the Falcons (3-3).

Calvin Johnson has been a big part of the Lions huge success this year, with 36 receptions, 564 receiving yards, averaging 15.7 yards per catch, and an outstanding 9 touchdowns through week 6. That puts him at 5th in the league for receptions, 5th in yards, and the man to beat in touchdowns.  He is on pace to make a lot of noise continuing through the rest of the season, making the Lions one of the most feared teams week by week.

Looking at his past performances with receiving yards and touchdowns in the 2011 season, the only bad week he had was in week two against the Chiefs where he was held to a season low 3 receptions with 29 yards receiving.  Also, in last Sunday’s loss against the 49ers he forgot his dancing shoes at home, not reaching the end zone at all. I feel he’s going to be dancing up a storm this week getting back to what he was called in to do 5 years ago, score touchdowns.

Viewing this Sunday’s matchup Matthew Stafford should have a field day throwing to his main man Johnson due to the Falcon’s average of almost 300 yards passing allowed each game (27th NFL). Another reason for the big passing game is the fact that the Lion’s backfield lead by RB Jahvid Best could be less of a factor due to the possibility of him sitting out because of a concussion suffered. With this being a potential drawback, all the Detroit faithful will be focused on “Megatron” with every ball thrown in his vicinity just waiting for an excuse to get rowdy on a Sunday afternoon.

Going back to the tough loss this past Sunday against the 49ers, and the eventful confrontation between head coaches Harbaugh and Schwartz after the game, everyone is hoping to get back on track this week by following their true leader in Calvin Johnson taking them to hunt down their next prey, the Falcons. This win will propel them to a (6-1) record looking to remain on pace with the Cheese heads of Green Bay atop the NFC, and give the Motor City new life.
