The World Champion Baltimore Ravens entered the draft with just as many holes to fill as any other NFL team. One of the keys to success for a repeat performance of last season was filling the voids left by long-time Ravens Ed Reed and Ray Lewis.
Baltimore did just that with their 32nd overall selection.
Former-Florida safety Matt Elam has been projected as the most complete safety in the draft, and will ease the woes in the secondary almost immediately. Elam is a Troy Polamalu type of player that can make plays close to the line of scrimmage or deep down the field in coverage. He is a disruptive defender with great closing speed to recover, should he be fooled by the elite pass-catchers in the NFL.
With Ed Reed and BErnard Pollard both leaving, Elam was the smart choice at the end of the first round. It should almost be expected that the Ravens will try to fill the voids of Anquan Boldin and Ray Lewis respectively in their day 2 picks. Top players like Keenan Allen and Arthur Brown would be candidates to do just that.
Regardless, Baltimore began their chance to repeat on the right foot by selecting Elam.
