Coming into the game the Denver Broncos were favored to blow out the Dallas Cowboys. Tony Romo threw for 506 yards and five touchdowns for Dallas (2-3), but he was intercepted by Danny Trevanthan inside the Dallas 30 to set up Prater’s winning kick. The teams combined for 1,039 yards of total offense in the second-highest scoring game in regulation since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970, according to stats.
Peyton Manning threw for 414 yards with 4 touchdowns and set another record with 20 touchdown passes in a 5 game span. In a game that was surrounded by a lot of offensive touchdowns, the ending of the game was measured by a defensive stop. Danny Trevathan had intercepted a pass that was crucial. It was 2 minutes left in the game and Romo was marching down the field to attempt to win the game, but that was short lived when Trevathan had jumped the route to end the game winning drive.
“I was baiting him,” said Trevathan, who scared his teammates with a knee injury in practice last week that turned out not to be serious.”Romo threw it and I felt like, man, hopefully I don’t drop the ball when I get in the end zone this time. I fell to the ground and said, ‘Forget it!’”
“It was pretty amazing that it came down to the defense making a big play at the end,” Denver coach John Fox said. “Thank God our offense kept us in the game all day long.”
The Broncos escaped by the skins of their teeth to remain undefeated.
