The San Diego Chargers traveled to Glendale, Arizona to take on the Arizona Cardinals in the final game of NFL preseason week three. The finale of the week didn’t have the flair of earlier games, as the Chargers were victorious 24-7.
San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is looking to bounce back after a disappointing season last season. In Arizona he completed 10 of his 18 passes for only 71 yards and one interception. Running back Ryan Matthews carried the ball 14 times for 57 yards and a touchdown on the night. Safety Brandon Taylor led the team with 5 tackles.
The Arizona Cardinals’ Achilles heel on Saturday night was their team discipline. They took 11 penalties for a total of 94 yards, a number that heavily influenced the game. Carson Palmer played into the third quarter and went 12 of 23 on pass attempts for a total of 122 yards and one touchdown. Rashard Mendenhall and Alfonso Smith carried the rushing game tonight with 6 carries for 47 yards and 5 carries for 44 yards, respectively.
Arizona will travel to Denver next week to play the Broncos and San Diego will head back home to host the San Francisco 49ers.
