Quarterback DREW BREES of the New Orleans Saints, cornerback PATRICK PETERSON of the Arizona Cardinals and kicker STEVEN HAUSCHKA of the Seattle Seahawks are the NFC Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the fourth week of the 2013 season (September 26, 29-30), the NFL announced today.
OFFENSE: QB DREW BREES, NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
- Brees completed 30 of 39 passes (76.9 percent) for 413 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions for a 144.5 passer rating in the Saints’ 38-17 win over Miami.
- He tied his own NFL records with his ninth consecutive 300-yard passing game and his 10th game in a row with at least 25 completions.
- The performance was his 10th career 400-yard passing game, the second most in NFL history trailing only Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (13).
- Brees moved into fourth place all-time with 4,146 completions, surpassing Pro Football Hall of Famer JOHN ELWAY (4,123). Brees passed Pro Football Hall of Famer FRAN TARKENTON (47,003) and moved into sixth place in NFL history with 47,353 passing yards.
- In his 13th year from Purdue, this is Brees’ 17th career Player of the Week Award and first since Week 5, 2012.
- Since joining the Saints in 2006, Brees has won 15 Player of the Week Awards, the most in franchise history. During that span, Brees’ 15 Player of the Week Awards are the most in the NFC and rank second in the NFL (TOM BRADY, 16).
DEFENSE: CB PATRICK PETERSON, ARIZONA CARDINALS
- Peterson had two interceptions and two tackles in the Cardinals’ 13-10 come-from-behind victory at Tampa Bay.
- His first interception came with 3:12 left in the game and Arizona trailing 10-3. Peterson returned the interception 11 yards to the Buccaneers’ 13-yard line. On the next play, the Cardinals scored a touchdown to tie the contest.
- After Arizona took a 13-10 lead, Peterson sealed the victory with an interception at the Tampa Bay 47-yard line with 48 seconds remaining in the game.
- The performance was the first multiple-interception game of his career.
- He is the first Cardinals player in more than 20 years (TIM MC DONALD, October 20, 1991) to record two interceptions in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter.
- In his third year from Louisiana State, this is Peterson’s first career Defensive Player of the Week Award. He has been named Special Teams Player of the Week twice (Weeks 9 and 12, 2011).
- Peterson and CALAIS CAMPBELL (Defense, Special Teams) are the only Cardinals to be named Player of the Week in two different categories.
- Peterson is the first Cardinals cornerback to be named Defensive Player of the Week since 2009 (DOMINIQUE RODGERS-CROMARTIE, Week 5).
