HBO Real Sports recently did a feature on the increasing fan violence at sporting events. Unfortunately, fan on fan violence has struck again. A man was seriously wounded after being stabbed near Candlestick Park yesterday as he was heading in to watch the game between the Giants and 49ers.
Sgt. Michael Andraychak of the San Francisco police informed the Associated Press that two men have been arrested in the stabbing of the 27-year old fan. Police further stated that the victim and attackers were all 49ers fans.
According to the police, the victim was approached by one of the six fans as they were heading into the stadium. An argument broke out between them and one of the suspects pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim in the chest. The victim is expected to survive.
As HBO Real Sports alluded to, violence in and around NFL and other sports stadiums have become an increasing alarming problem, one that it seems the police and stadium security has not been able to control with great success.
It’s no secret that alcohol is at the source of the majority of these attacks. With the rise of PSL’s, rising ticket and concessions prices the NFL will need to do more to protect its fans no matter their rooting interest to make going to the game not only more enjoyable, but safer at a time when more fans are opting for the home viewing experience instead.
