The priority for the Philadelphia Eagles at the end of last season was clear — protect quarterback Michael Vick. To that end, with the 23rd pick in this NFL draft, the Eagles selected Baylor offensive lineman Danny Watkins.
Analysis: The Eagles were thought to be interested in Colorado CB Jimmy Smith and could use help at linebacker as well. But they have plenty of picks remaining, and Watkins can slot right in at right guard where the Eagles have an immediate need. Interesting story, Watkins. Grew up in Canada and wanted to be a firefighter. Went to Butte J.C. to study firefighting, got recruited to play football there, led team to a championship and transferred to Baylor, where he blossomed into a first-round pick at the advanced age of 26.
