After the latest loss dropped the Carolina Panthers record to 1-5, Quarterback Cam Newton was searching for answers to his teams woes. “”I’m going to bring in a suggestion box. And I want your suggestions in that suggestion box, because I sure don’t know. I really don’t.” Newton told the media.
Now a day later, the Panthers have released an announcement that Panthers owner Jerry Richardson has fired General Manager Marty Hurney.
“This was an extremely difficult decision,” Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said in a statement. “Marty made every effort to bring success to the Panthers and took the team to a Super Bowl and two NFC championship games. Unfortunately, we have not enjoyed the success we hoped for in recent years. I have the greatest respect and admiration for Marty and will always appreciate the way he tirelessly served the organization.”
Matt Hurney has been the General Manager of the Panthers since 2002 and built teams that went to Super Bowl XXVIII and NFC Championship games in 2003 and 2005 as well as a NFC South Division Title in 2008.
“I’m not an excuse guy. This is a bottom-line business,” Hurney said. “I’m the one that’s responsible for every player in that locker room, every coach, every scout that we have. It falls on me. There are no excuses in this business, there’s final scores. Right now we are 1-5, and I’m responsible for that.”
No timetable has been set for a replacement but for the time being Head Coach Ron Rivera will be taking over the G.M. duties.
