[VIDEO] The first ever NFL Player’s Association presentation of the “Business of Football: Rookie Edition” kicks into full swing today. The schedule is filled with a mix of classes and activities designed to help players succeed mentally, physically and financially in the game of football.
NFLPA president Kevin Mawae opened the event last night by sharing some insights about the business side of the game and acknowledging the approximately 160 rookies in the room. “You’re here because you want to be here and that means that you take the business of football seriously,” Mawae said.
Desmond Howard was the master of ceremonies for the panel discussion that featured Terry Jackson, Ryan Nece, Michael Clayton and Jeremy Zuttah. Howard said the goal was to help each rookie transition from the college to the professional world and that they should view themselves as “professionals from now on.”
The panelists were all were very candid in sharing their personal stories and hoped that the players take to heart the guidance they would be receiving this week. “The people here are trying to help you stay in the league as long as possible,” Jackson said.
It’s clear that the rookies recognize there are many challenges to being a NFL player today. Those in attendance are looking to get a jump-start on the learning curve by asking questions now so mistakes can be avoided later.
The event will also include community service programs and an opportunity for the players to have performance evaluations made by the experts at IMG Sports Academies.
“You beat the odds and forever you will be known as a professional football player,” Mawae said. The NFLPA is hoping to educate the 2011 rookies on the business of football and graduate a class of true professionals.
