In the Hudson River, docked at the Hyatt Regency in Jersey is a yacht. It features five dance floors, five bars and a glass elevator. The 30,000 square foot vessel is a ship worthy of royalty. Football royalty has taken over the Cornucopia Majesty as the Denver Broncos held their media conference inside the vessel.
“The first thing I thought of, I asked if it was the same temperature upstairs because the weight room we were in was rather warm and they said it was a lot better once we got upstairs. It’s cool being on a boat and doing an interview. It’s interesting” said linebacker Paris Lenon.
The warmth of the ship hosted Lenon as well as Coach John Fox, Demaryius Thomas, Julius Thomas, Knowshon Moreno, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and Terrance Knighton.
The players spoke about the importance of preparation and staying focused on the task at hand. “It’s all about preparation. As a team, that is something we talk about, it’s something we focus on “said tight end Julius Thomas. “(It’s about) coming out there and working hard every day, not taking for granted the little things, focus on your preparation”.
Along with being prepared for Seattle, Denver also realizes that they also have to prepare for the weather conditions as well. With the league’s number one passing attack, players like Demaryius Thomas have been asked for over a week on how they feel about playing in poor weather.
“Cold weather doesn’t bother me. I never really played in the snow. Out in Denver it might snow a little bit but cold weather doesn’t really bother me. I don’t know, we’ll have to see. So far we’ve been successful, we made it to the Super Bowl. So, we’ll have to see.”
The quote of the day about whether or not the weather and field conditions will affect the Denver offense came from Julius Thomas who simple said “I think it will be the same temperature for the Broncos and the Seahawks. We’re not very concerned about the weather. If we’re thinking about the weather, we’re going to miss a lot of other things that we need to be focused on to be successful offensively.”
Paris Lenon has experience cold weather before. He recalled a game from his time as a Green Bay packer where they played a game that was about 30 below zero with the wind chill. Regardless of what the thermometer says the goal of Denver’s defense will be to contain Russell Wilson according to Lenon.
“Some mobile quarterbacks use their legs to just take off and run and some use their legs to create opportunities to throw the ball. I think he does a little bit of both. You see him avoid pressure, create time, throw the ball down the field and sometimes he does keep
the ball and move the chains himself. He’s a difficult guy to deal with, but you have to have a plan.”
The Bronco’s resurgent nose tackle Terrance Knighton has provided an anchor for Denver’s defense this post-season and he reiterated that stopping Wilson is a key to victory. “You’ve just got to watch a lot of film. Quarterbacks have tendencies. His tendency is that he is a right-handed quarterback; he wants to get out to his right and throw. He’s more successful that way. So we’ve got to do a good job of keeping him in the pocket and force him out of his comfort zone. When he’s moving left he’ll tend to run it more and when he’s moving right he wants to pass it more. We just have to do a good job of containing him. He’ll get out and he’ll make his plays during the game, but we’ll just have to limit them.”
Denver began practice today and will continue interviews and media sessions on the Cornucopia Majesty after Media day tomorrow.
