With the upcoming season quickly approaching, one team that is being talked about is none other than ‘America’s Team’ themselves, the Dallas Cowboys.
Finishing another season 8-8 and their playoff decision rested again on the final game of the season, the Cowboys missed the playoffs yet again. They came awfully close even without superstar quarterback Tony Romo.
Romo suffered a devastating back injury that required surgery. As of now Romo is ready to return to the field but he has not been fully cleared for full contact practice. With training camp right around the corner, team officials say Romo will be ready for camp.
When we thought the defense couldn’t get any worse than what they were last year, the Cowboys suffered a key injury from a non-contact practice. Defense star Sean Lee suffered a Torn ACL that didn’t come as a surprise to many. Lee came into the league on a partially torn ACL so it was a matter of time before it could happen.
Lee was placed on the IR list, and with that the Cowboys defense took a major hit. With Lee getting his knee fixed, he is projected to come back stronger than ever.
The Cowboys are projected to go 3-13. Yes you read that correctly, 3-13. Some of the notable matchups for the 2014 season will be the season opener against the very talented San Francisco 49ers and the in state rivalry against the Houston Texans in week 5.
The Cowboys were lucky to draw them at home this season. That matchup is the first one in since 2010 and the Cowboys hold the record 2-1.
During the draft the Cowboys had a chance to get Johnny ‘Money’ Manziel but passed on him taking offensive tackle Zack Martin. This raised eyebrows among the Cowboys fan base leaving the question in the air: “Why pick an offensive lineman instead picking someone that can help the defense?”
Last season, the reason Romo ended up on his back so much was because of the lack of protection he had. With this back surgery he just had, he needs the most protection ever. Martin is also the guy who fell on Sean Lee in a non-contact activity at OTAs that injured Lee.
This season, the Cowboys have a lot to prove and show the fans they are still ‘America’s Team’. With Demarco Murray and Dez Bryant both healthy, this team is a force to reckon with. If the defense can get it together the Cowboys will be contenders the NFC East title.
