San Diego Chargers general manager A. J. Smith has said that he is “comfortable” talking about a long term deal for wide receiver Vincent Jackson; however, Jackson has yet to hear anything on the topic. And Jackson has publicly stated his preference to remain a Charger, so it’s really on Smith’s shoulders to pick up the phone.
“There hasn’t been any communication as far as contracts go,” Jackson said after Wednesday’s Pro Bowl practice. “If that’s their feeling, that’s great. I would like to stay in San Diego. Obviously, that’s my home, that’s where I was drafted. I’ve got some good guys around me -– Philip Rivers, (Antonio) Gates, Ryan Mathews. It would be a great place for me to stay, so we’ll see if that works out.”
Jackson led the team in receiving this year, with 60 catches for 1106 yards, and 9 TDs. His average of 18.4 yards per catch was sixth in the league, and his 9 TDs tied him for sixth.
He was given the franchise tag last season, which held him for a year at a salary of $11.4 million, but he’d much rather nail down a long term contract, and given his production, the Chargers would be wise to accommodate him.
