It took a Dallas Cowboys receiver TERRANCE WILLIAMS catch and then his failure to get out of bounds situation, for the New York Giants to escape with a 20-19 win at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
That heartbreaking instance by Williams took the spotlight off of Dallas rookie DAK PRESCOTT’S (25 of 45 for 227 yards, no scores or picks) rookie debut and his teammate DAN BAILEY’S four successful field goal performance. Instead the spotlight shines on the Giants (1-0) and the work of players like running back RASHAD JENNINGS and receivers ODELL BECKHAM JR. and VICTOR CRUZ.
Jennings (18 carries for 75 yards and no score) spearheaded the Giants’ last drive of the game with 7 carries for 40 yards. Those successive carries by Jennings ran precious time off the clock and eventually helped do in the Cowboys in their quest to score on their last offensive series of the game.
As for Cruz, his eventual game-winning score late in the fourth quarter, was his first scoring reception since September 21, 2014 when the Giants beat the Houston Texans 30-14 at home. That’s 722-long days of not even touching the end zone for Cruz.
Beckham Jr. had a super quiet game (for him) with only 4 grabs for 73 yards and no score. But he was instrumental in setting up scores and making the Cowboys secondary worry about him so much to the fact that it opened up doors for other receivers.
Down 6-0, the Giants went to work on the Cowboys defense on their first drive of the second quarter. And the Giants’ hard work was buttressed by a 45-yard reception down the left sideline by Beckham Jr., which he took to the DAL 10 yard line.
Beckham Jr’s super helpful reception, set up a back of the end zone 15-yard touchdown reception by tight end LARRY DONNELL from ELI MANNING which gave the Giants an eventual 7-6 lead. Manning finished 19 of 28 for 207 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 pick.
Not too long after that Donnell score, Bailey connected on his third field goal (25 yards) which gave the Cowboys a 9-7 lead with 4:02 to go in the second quarter.
The Giants obtained their second lead of the game, when Manning found rookie receiver STERLING SHEPARD (3 catches for 43 yards and 1 score) near the right corner of the end zone for a 9-yard score. The Giants went into the half with a 13-9 lead.
Off the heels of a BRANDON CARR interception——that was Carr’s first theft since the 2013 season——Elliott scored the first touchdown of his NFL career on an up the middle run, with him finishing the run by diving into the end zone. That 8-yard touchdown run by Elliott gave the Cowboys took a 16-13 lead with 10:47 left in the second quarter.
Bailey proved his worth again with 54-yard successful field goal to put the Cowboys up 19-13 with 13:59 left in the contest.
But the Giants snatched the lead back, when receiver Cruz caught a Manning pass in the end zone from 3 yards out. That play gave the Giants a 20-19 lead with 6:13 left in the game.
The Cowboys (0-1) ran out of time on their last drive of the game which enabled the Giants to nab their first win over the Cowboys on the road since October 28, 2012——–a 29-24 win for the Giants.
