Chicago came into Thursday’s game leading the series 92-86-6 against Green Bay, but took a step back with a 23-10 loss to the Packers who were looking to rebound from last week’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The Bears offense couldn’t get anything started in the first half and were completely shut out, going into half time with a 13-0 deficit.
Quarterback Jay Cutler particularly had a rough night, ending up 11 of 27 for 126 yards and 1 TD, with 4 interceptions, and he was sacked seven times. It was completely Cutler’s fault, as he didn’t get much help from his offensive line. In particular, J’marcus Webb had a rough night trying to contain to Clay Matthews, who had 3.5 sacks.
Another Bear who had a rough night was Brandon Marshall who only had 2 catches for 24 yards and a dropped touchdown. Overall the receiving corps had rough night with a number of dropped passes.
In the second half, the Bears lost running back Matt Forte to an ankle injury after he was off to a good start in the game with 7 rushes for 31 yards and 4 receptions for 49 yards, as he was the Bears leading receiver in the game as well. Michael Bush replaced Forte and gave the offense a boost with 14 rushes for 54 yards.
One positive for the Bears was the defense, who came up with 5 sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble. Tim Jennings kept things rolling this season with another interception this week that gives him 3 in two games this year.
The Bears defense did a reasonable job keeping the Packers offense in check, as reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers finished 22 of 32 for 219 yards and 1 TD and 1 interception. After breaking the single season record for passer efficiency last year with a 122.5, including not dropping below 110 until December of last season, Rodgers has yet to exceed a 95 efficiency in the first two games this season.
The Bears fall to 1-1, and face the St. Louis Rams next weekend with a long week to make corrections.
