Bart Starr was a tremendous winner at every level of football. He also was considered a great man away from the game too. So it was only right that an award was named after him. On Saturday, February 3rd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Bart Starr Award will be presented at the Super Bowl Breakfast. The breakfast will be held at 8 a.m. central standard time at the Minneapolis Hilton.
The Bart Starr Award, which is given out in conjunction with Athletes In Action, is one of the most prestigious awards given out each season. It not only exemplifies the leadership that the winner displays off the field, but on it also. This year’s winner that will be recognized is Baltimore Ravens tight end Benjamin Watson. The veteran tight end out of the University of Georgia was selected as the winner for this season by a panel. Along with his longevity and perseverance on the field, he is determined to affect change in this world through his foundations. Watson’s One More foundation is all about being a blessing to people and communities and his Hello Beautiful is an organization that creates a safe place for girls to discuss things.
“As Bart Starr has exemplified, there is nothing more important and lasting than a man’s character,” Watson said when contacted about the award. “I am extremely humbled and honored to receive this award in his name. Through football, family and faith, my desire is to leave a legacy that lasts beyond the game. To this end, I am extremely grateful to the Starr family and the enduring example they continue to set.”
The award was given to New England Patriots special team ace Matthew Slater last season and it could not have gone to someone more deserving than Watson for all that he does.
