Sproles Closing in on Record

Not to be outdone by quarterback Drew Brees breaking Dan Marino’s 27-year-old single season passing yardage record, Darren Sproles is within striking distance of the record for most combined single season yardage.  Sproles currently has a league-leading 2,528 yards this season, needing 163 yards to break the record set by the Titans Derrick Mason in 2002 (2,647).

To be clear – this is total yards, not yards from scrimmage, and it includes return yardage.  Sproles has racked up yards in just about every way possible.  He has 563 rushing yards, 681 receiving yards, 1,035 yards on kickoff returns, and 249 yards on punt returns, along with a total of 9 touchdowns this season.

The record for total yards from scrimmage belongs to Chris Johnson, who set it in his 2,006-rushing-yard season in 2009 when he had a total of 2,509 yards from scrimmage.
