Rams-Chiefs Postgame Notes

MARGIN OF VICTORY: Kansas City’s 34-7 victory signaled the second time this season that the Chiefs have registered a 27-point margin of victory over an opponent. The other instance came vs. New England on ESPN’s Monday Night Football as the Chiefs beat the Patriots 41-14. The 27-point margins of victory represent the widest winning margins since the Chiefs recorded a 35-point victory, beating the Washington Redskins 45-10 on Dec. 8, 2013.

 

DEFENSE LIMITS RAMS SCORING OPPORTUNITIES: After allowing a touchdown on the game’s opening drive, the Kansas City defense did not allow any St. Louis points in the final 56:56 of game action. It marks the first time the Kansas City defense allowed seven or fewer points since a 24-7 victory vs. Oakland on Oct. 13, 2013.

 

RUSHING TOUCHDOWNS ALLOWED: Through Week 8 of the 2014 season, the Chiefs are the only team in the NFL to not allow a rushing touchdown on defense.

TOTAL YARDS: The Chiefs gained 361 yards on offensive and limited the Rams to 200 yards of total offense. The 200 yards allowed marks the fewest yards surrendered by the Chiefs defense in 2014.

 

TIME OF POSSESSION: The Chiefs held a 35:38 to 24:22 advantage in time of possession for today’s game.

 

TEAM HITS A SEASON-HIGH FOR SACKS: The Chiefs defense finished the day with 7.0 sacks (-44.0 yards), marking the 54th time in franchise history the club has recorded 6.0 or more sacks and the first such game since recording 6.0 sacks at Washington on Dec. 8, 2013. Kansas City owns a 48-5-1 record (.898) when recording 6.0 or more sacks and have outscored its opponents 1,185 to 651 in those contests.

 

HOUSTON DROPS DAVIS A TRIO OF TIMES: LB Justin Houston recorded 3.0 sacks (-17.0 yards) of QB Austin Davis to give him 10.0 sacks (-39.0 yards) for the 2014 season. Going intoSunday’s afternoon games, Houston’s 10.0 sacks rank him first in the NFL.

Houston now owns 36.5 sacks (-210.5 yards) for his career. He was the second-fastest player in team history to reach 30.0 career sacks, passing that plateau in 47 games. Pro Football Hall of Fame LB Derrick Thomas recorded 30.0 sacks in his first 31 games. His 36.5 sacks move him into ninth place in franchise history for most sacks. He passed Wilbur Young’s mark of 35.0 sacks for ninth place. With 3.5 more sacks, he would become just the ninth player in franchise history to record 40.0 or more sacks.

BAILEY RECORDS MULTIPLE SACKS: DL Allen Bailey dropped QB Austin Davis for 1.5 sacks (-7.0 yards) in the game, giving him a career-best 4.0 sacks (-26.0 yards) for the 2014 season. He now owns 7.0 sacks (-43.0 yards) for his career. It marks his second multi-sack performance in the past three games after recording 1.5 sacks (-9.0 yards) at San Francisco (10/5/14). Bailey added four tackles (three solo), including one for loss, and a career-high three QB pressures in the game.

 

DEE FORD RECORDS FIRST QB TAKEDOWN: Rookie LB Dee Ford recorded his first 0.5 sack (-2.0 yards) by teaming up with Allen Bailey to bring down QB Austin Davis. Ford finished the day with three tackles (two solo) and a QB pressure.

 

WALKER AND HOWARD COMBINE FOR SACK: DL Vance Walker and DL Jaye Howard combined for a four-yard sack of QB Austin Davis in the fourth quarter of today’s game. Walker now has 1.5 sacks (-12.0 yards) since joining the Chiefs and it gives him 9.5 career sacks (-55.0 yards). For Howard, it marks his first-career NFL sack.

 

PARKER GRABS INTERCEPTION AND A QUARTERBACK TAKEDOWN: DB Ron Parker recorded an interception of QB Austin Davis and returned it 10 yards in the first quarter. It marks his first interception of the 2014 season and is his third career interception.

 

The interception marks the fourth interception for the Chiefs this season and is the first for the club in the opening quarter of a game.

 

Parker also recorded a 14-yard sack of Davis in the second quarter, marking his second-career sack (-17.0 yards). He finished the day with four solo tackles, including one for a loss, a QB pressure and a pass defensed to go with his sack and his interception.

 

CHARLES FINDS ENDZONE: RB Jamaal Charles recorded rushing touchdowns of one yard and 36 yards in the contest, giving him four touchdown rushes this season and six overall touchdowns for 2014. His 36-yard rushing touchdown marks his longest carry of the 2014 season.

 

Dating back to the start of the 2013 season, Charles has recorded 25 total touchdowns, more than any other player in the NFL.

SMITH SETS EFFICIENCY RECORD WITH THE BALL IN HIS HAND: QB Alex Smith completed 24 of 28 passes (85.7%) for 226 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions, good for a 100.3 passer rating. His 85.7% completion percentage ranks as top mark in franchise history, topping his previous mark of 85.0% set on 17 of 20 passes at Oakland on Dec. 15, 2013. He completed a stretch of 10 consecutive passes in the game.

It marks his 20th career regular season game with a 100.0 or better passer rating and his eighth regular season such game since joining the Chiefs in 2013. Including postseason contests, Smith now owns 22 career games with a 100.0 or better passer rating. Smith added 24 yards on four carries (6.0 avg.).

 

Smith connected with a total of eight different receivers in today’s game, marking the third time this season he has thrown to eight or more teammates. He found nine teammates at Denver (9/14) and eight receivers week at San Diego (10/19).

 

COLQUITT PUTS THREE INSIDE THE 20: P Dustin Colquitt booted four punts for 182 yards (45.5 gross, 35.0 net), landing three punts inside the 20-yard line. Colquitt has landed 16 of his 28 punts this season inside the 20-yard line. He has now landed 301 punts inside the 20-yard line in his career, the most in Chiefs history. His 301 punts inside the 20 move him into the top 10 in NFL history for punts inside the 20-yard line, making him just the 10th player to reach that mark.

DAVIS TAKES KICKOFF TO THE HOUSE: RB Knile Davis returned the opening kick of the second half 99 yards for a touchdown, giving him two career kickoff return touchdowns. His first came on a 108-yard kick return – tied for the second-longest kickoff return for a touchdown in NFL history – against Denver on Dec. 1, 2013. He now owns two of the six longest kickoff returns in franchise history.

SANTOS NAILS FIELD GOALS: K Cairo Santos booted two field goals in today’s game, a career-long 53-yarder and a 28-yard effort. He has now made eight consecutive field goals and is 10 of 12 (83.3%) for the season. His 10 field goal conversions tie for fifth-most by a rookie kicker in team history.
