Solid as a rock: that truly is the best way to describe Chargers cornerback Quentin Jammer. The eleventh year man and former All American out of the University of Texas has been a mainstay in the Chargers lineup from the day he was drafted in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft by San Diego, and that didn’t stop this past season. A member of the Chargers 50th Anniversary team, Jammer is still considered one of the best in the game, even at age 33.
Just as consistent as his on field play however, Jammer has also taken advantage of playing in the same city for eleven years by holding annual charity events in the area to benefit his Jammer Family Foundation. One of his events is the annual “Jamming under the Stars” show, where a ticket gets you access to a private ranch for a free concert under the clear San Diego sky. Another popular event is Jammer’s “JBowl” get together where Jammer recruits other NFL players to participate in a day of fun bowling to help the Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy research as well as the Jammer Family Foundation who support the San Pasqual Academy, a school for foster teens. In the event’s past it has also supported the Boys and Girls club of San Diego by doing live and silent auctions. A third annual event that Jammer hosts is his “Crush for a Cause” party that supports his own “Legends for Literacy” program. Each year Quentin gathers a couple of his NFL buddies to meet and great at the local function along with signing some items that are auctioned off to support the cause. All money raised helps supports childhood education in the San Diego area with a focus on literacy.
The common point of all these events helps enhance the vision Jammer had when he started his foundation. “The goal of the foundation is to provide encouragement and support for disadvantaged youth who have limited resources, to develop their educational and professional goals.” Jammer stated on his website.” Growing up in Angleton, Texas, I saw firsthand the impact violence and neglect have on youth. So when I moved to San Diego, I vowed to make a positive impact on the community and aid programs that teach kids the importance of education and perseverance.”
Jammer’s contract extension signed before the 2007 season will expire at the end of the season. Despite where he will play next year being up in question however, one thing remains certain; no matter where he is, whether it be San Diego or somewhere else, Quentin will be looking to help support the education of the children who need help. “I strongly believe that each child should be given the same opportunity for education and athletics.” Jammer continued on his website. “I know that getting off track is easy, so a solid support system must be established.” “Creating and supporting young leaders will help us maintain a positive and prosperous community.” At this rate, Quentin doesn’t have anything to worry about as his presence among children is certainly doing wonders on multiple levels.
