It is quite likely that you’ve never heard of Frank Collins. The former NFL running back is not widely known, largely because he played in an era prior to the creation of the Internet. Only starters from before Internet times are now available, and Collins was not a member of that category. Although a bit under the radar, Collins actively participates as a member of the football community and is enjoying life after football.
Drafted out of the University of Utah, Collins played a decade of football as a running back in the late 70’s to early 80’s, spending time between the NFL, USFL, and Canadian football league. When in the NFL, he played for four different teams, the Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Bengals, Washington Redskins, and most notably the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was not a starter, but did see some playing time, mostly on practice squads though. Many former players have said he was a very fast, short, and tough back, traits that gave him the nickname “Frank the Tank.” He even scored a touchdown or two for the Steelers during their Steel Curtain days.
Pro Player Insiders recently caught up with Collins at the NFL Players Party in Indianapolis during the week leading up to Super Bowl XLVI.
He offered some insight into his favorite current NFL players and what he’s been doing since his football days came to an end. On the question of who his favorite current NFL players are, Collins said, “I like a lot of guys. Arian Foster with Houston; I love him as a running back.” Also, as a former Steeler and a current resident of Pittsburgh, Collins mentioned, “I think Roethlisberger is a great player,” although ending by saying, “I truly can’t pick one player, there’s a lot of them.”
Following his NFL career, Collins has experimented with many jobs, from nursing home administration, to managing a Tractor Supply Co. store in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, and others.
What is Frank Collins doing now? Well, he said, “I have a couple jobs. I’m an insurance agent. Not only that, but I’m a marketing agent for a technology company.”
Other hobbies that he indulges himself with are working out. “I work out every day, I lift. I run every day.” He also enjoys his three Harley motorcycles and his Harley truck.
Frank Collins may not be a widely-known star out of the NFL, and he may not have had an illustrious playing career, but his story still remains interesting. He provides an example of how careers after playing professional football can be difficult to find and maintain. Life after the NFL is not always glorious and lavish as popular belief might convey. Not every retired player owns mansions, fancy cars, or five-star gourmet restaurants. Although he will likely never become a household name, Frank Collins is a great example of transitioning to a success life after football.

I looked up my name and came across this article. It’s pretty cool me and him have the same name and nickname. I’m striving to get where he was, in the NFL.
