NFL Draft Grades: AFC South

Houston Texans: B
1.) Kevin Johnson, CB, Wake Forest
2.) Benardrick McKinney, ILB, Mississippi St.
3.) Jaelen Strong, WR, Arizona St.
5.) Keith Mumphery, WR, Michigan St.
6.) Reshard Cliett, OLB, USF
6.) Christian Covington, DT, Rice
7.) Kenny Hilliard, RB, LSU

kevin Johnson

Bottom Line: The Texans did a very solid job drafting this year. They took their first three picks and took players who all could start as rookies. Then, with their later picks, took pieces to develop. Johnson, does everything right and can play man or zone. A four-year starter as a Demon Deacon. McKinney, solves the issues at inside linebacker. Injuries and little depth have hampered the Texans at this position for a very long time. McKinney and Brian Cushing form a great tandem. Strong, fell due to a broken wrist, but had a stellar pro day. He will be dynamic in the slot as a rookie. Going to be a while to see how this draft class turns out.

Indianapolis Colts: B
1.) Phillip Dorsett, WR, Miami
3.) D’Joun Smith, CB, Florida Atlantic
3.) Henry Andersen, DT, Stanford
4.) Clayton Geathers, S, UCF
5.) David Parry, DT, Stanford
6.) Josh Robinson, RB, Mississippi St.
6.) Amarlo Herrera, ILB, Georgia
7.) Denzelle Hill, OT, Mars Hill

Bottom Line: I would hate to be in a track meet against the Colts. Drafting Dorsett and pairing him with TY Hilton, give the Colts a pair of blazing fast receivers. Smith with their next pick is solid. He is versatile and has a nose for the ball. He had eight picks and 21 pass break-ups over the previous two seasons. They also gave the secondary a thumper in Geathers. He set the tone at UCF and brings some grit that the Colts defense need. In the vein of needing things on defense, the Colts defensive line was weak last season. They bolstered that with a pair of old Stanford teammates in Parry and Andersen. Does anyone know where Mars Hill is?

Jacksonville Jaguars: A
1.) Dante Fowler, DE, Florida
2.) T.J. Yeldon, RB, Alabama
3.) A.J. Cann, OG, South Carolina
4.) James Sample, S, Louisville
5.) Rashad Greene, WR, Florida St.
6.) Michael Bennett, DT, Ohio St.
7.) Neal Sterling, WR, Monmouth
7.) Ben Koyack, TE, Notre Dame

Bottom Line: I wrote an article, now, two years ago urging for people to get on the Jaguars bandwagon. While they lost one more game last year than the year I wrote the article, I will urge it again: Get on this bandwagon! Look at this draft class! Their top three picks could start as rookies. Sample, could develop into a sure starter. Greene, is arguably the best slot receiver in this draft class. His hands rarely drop anything. Bennett, shockingly, slipped to the sixth-round but that seems mostly due to injury. High character, interior pass rusher. Get on the wagon now. Coach Gus Bradley and GM David Caldwell are building something special in Jacksonville.

Tennessee Titans: B-
1.) Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
2.) Dorial Green-Beckham, WR, Oklahoma
3.) Jeremiah Poutassi, OG, Utah
4.) Angelo Blackson, DT, Auburn
4.) Jalston Fowler, FB, Alabama
5.) David Cobb, RB, Minnesota
6.) Deiontrez Mount, OLB, Louisville
6.) Andy Gallik, C, Boston College
7.) Tre McBride, WR, William & Mary

Bottom Line: This is a great haul by coach Ken Whisenhunt. Mariota, was the obvious choice and gives Whisenhunt a player to mold. Don’t be surprised if Zach Mettenberger starts the season. I had the Titans taking DGB with the first pick in Round 2, they traded back seven spots and still got him. A terrific job of working the draft. Poutassi, is a road grader who will make fifth-rounder Cobb happy. Cobb, compliments last year’s second-rounder Bishop Sankey. Whisenhunt loves his fullbacks and got a great talent in Fowler. He does everything you ask him to and does terrifically and he can catch. McBride to finish up the day is stellar. He is a true talent with great hands.
