The ‘Redskins Rule’ goes like this – if the Washington Redskins lose the final home game before Election Day, the non-incumbent party wins the presidency. If the Redskins win, the incumbent party that won the popular vote in the previous election wins.
Here’s a bit of the history on the accuracy of that rule from freep.com, “since 1937, when the Redskins moved to Washington, that rule has only failed once in 18 presidential elections: In 2004, when incumbent George W. Bush won vs. John Kerry after the Redskins lost 28-14 to the Green Bay Packers.”
The Carolina Panthers defeated the Redskins this past Sunday with a final score of 21-13. Applying the Redskins Rule, Mitt Romney will win the 2012 election against Barack Obama
Just some food for thought as we try to amuse ourselves now that the political ads are sadly coming to an end. Thankfully, the late night comics and the impartial debate moderators will continue to flood the airwaves.
As of Monday night, the pollsters were showing Obama ahead by a slight margin. That said, we will have to wait until after the polls close Tuesday night to see if the Redskins Rule prevailed in 2012.
