Joey Logano has to feel for Kevin Harvick. Last week at Pocono Raceway, Logano had three laps to go and he would take the checkered flag. However, his gas tank was not thinking there were three laps left in the race, as Logano ran out of gas and left him without a victory.
On Sunday, August 9th, Kevin Harvick was leading on the last lap as his gas tank did not think there was a lap left in the race and he ran out of gas, giving Joey Logano the victory during the Cheez-It 355 at the Glen at Watkins Glen International, for his first Sprint Cup Series road course win. Logano had not won in the 2015 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series since the season opening Daytona 500 so this win was just as big for Logano. Not many drivers can say they got their first Daytona 500 victory and their first road course victory in the same season. The best part about the road course win, Logano led one lap – the last win.
It was evident in Victory Lane Logano was clearly excited
“I’m still just trying to catch my breath. I was really excited after that one. I was running down Harvick there for a little bit, and once I got close to him, he started to pick up his pace a little bit, which was good, because I needed him to run out of gas. I started to catch him a little bit, and I drove into (Turn) 1 too hard (on the final lap) and started to wheel hop. I just about lost it, and at that point you just hope he runs out of gas, which he did in the last corner. It makes up for last week. We lost the race last week the same way, so it makes up for it to get it this week.”
But, not only did Logano take the checkered flag Sunday, he also took the checkered flag on Saturday, August 8th in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Zippo 200 at The Glen, giving him a sweep of the weekend. If you remember, Kyle Busch also swept both the Xfinity Series and the Sprint Cup Series at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which is a rare feat for a driver. Another rare feat for drivers is doing what Logano did with his win in the Xfinity Series – he has entered eight Xfinity Series races in 2015 and won four of them. Logano knew this was a big win in the Xfinity Series
“It’s pretty special as a driver.”
With Logano’s win Sunday, it backs the point he is a great talent. But will he be a factor in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Chase for the Championship?
