“I tried to match your breathing, beating my little heart against yours….”
As a daddy’s girl you never forget moments like this.
I have a lot of memories with my father, like being 7 yrs old waking up early on Saturday mornings letting him refresh my hair style from the day before so my brother and I could go run errands with him, or having debates on what I couldn’t eat at a restaurant because of my allergies after we were already seated. My father always accepted my love for sports and helped nurture it, always agreed and supported whatever direction I wanted to go. I wasn’t your typical little girl I played baseball, I was a cheerleader, ran cross country, and track and he was there for all of that. My father has played a role in who I have become today because he never judged me instead he guided me. Things like this I cherish because nobody can take them away from me. If I had a song that represented me and my father if would be “Your Joy” By Chrisette Michele. That song should be the daddy’s girl anthem. It triggers so many childhood memories. This song takes me to a great place. Sons have a different type of bond with their father so I decided to explore that relationship from DJ BIG ROB’s point of view.
What role did your father play in your circle of influence when it came down to your interest in music and sports?
DJBR-Well as far as sports, my dad always had a basketball hoop in the back yard over the garage, so I can remember watching him and my uncles playing basketball and trying to play but not being big enough to get the ball to the basket. Also my dad was always a huge Lakers fan as I am now. So it’s kind of cool that he was a fan during Kareem and Magic’s era and I got to enjoy watching Kobe’s legacy from the beginning. As far as music, my dad always had music playing, whether it was Christmas time and he was playing Motown Christmas and Jackson 5 Christmas records on the stereo system, or if it was him playing Isley Bros. tapes in the car, to bumping Ice Cube – It was a good day in the summertime.
If there was a song that represented your father would it be?
DJBR-Probably something like James Brown – Papa don’t take no mess. (laughs). Maybe not that record but definitely something of that type. My dad was pretty tough back then but I appreciate and understand it all now. I look at some people and the way they were raised and it definitely makes me realize how lucky I was.
Is there anything else you would like to add about your father and the relationship he plays in your life?
DJBR-Just to say thank you for never giving up on me and being a positive role model for me. I think I learned a lot about work ethic from him going to work every day and still coming home and doing the work inside our home and with me as a single Dad. Those are some of the things that you’ll never learn from somebody but your dad, and I’m grateful to have him in my life growing up.
Since he had such a positive role model in his life I wanted to know more about DJ BIG ROB but through his music. Always being involved in music since grammar school where he played in the school’s band, it was only natural that he wanted to pursue a career that fulfilled that interest. DJ BIG ROB came on the scene through the mixtape circuit. It wasn’t until he explored college life where he learned the art of Djing and the environment that complemented it. So of course I wanted to know what was going through his mind after his first experience.
DJBR- I thought it was amazing how you can control people’s emotions with your own musical preference, at that point I decided to see what this world was about. The world of DJ’s can be exciting yet tiring but if you have a love for doing what you do it gives you the drive to keep going and exceed your limits as an artist.
What keeps you motivated to continue down this path?
DJBR-The Love of music. I always think what I would be doing if it wasn’t for the love of music. I think that the combined challenge of being consistent and being able to create dope music projects is what keeps me going.
I Have had the opportunity to jam out to a couple of his sets throughout this past year and I know I loved every minute of it, right down to the blending, which is an experience in itself if you know your music.
What was the best experience you encountered?
DJBR-My best experience was when I was given the opportunity to DJ in Tampa FL. I got booked at a Haitian night club. The DJ aspect wasn’t the icing on the cake for me, it was how beautiful Tampa was and that my skill set as a DJ allowed me to be in that atmosphere experiencing what I love in a different location.
I know what it’s like to take your talents to a different level. I‘ve had the chance to dance in Toronto with some of their popular reggae DJ’s and the energy from the atmosphere gave me so much adrenaline rush, one of the best feelings as a dancer.
If you wanted the world to know one thing about your passion what would it be?
DJBR-I would say the richest DJ isn’t always the best one and that there is an art to doing what we do. I feel like sometimes the job of a DJ gets over shadowed by the celebrity and popularity factors.
It’s no secret that I love my sports and my music and I love to dance, so I wanted to see what pro’s he identified with.
Do you have a Team or Player?
DJBR- It’s the LAKE SHOW ALLL DAY! It’s been Kobe since 1996, but if I had the opportunity to make a mixtape for team or athlete it would be for the 1998 Knicks because they would beat you up if necessary, all the way down to the coach (laughs) I would probably have a lot of DMX “Get at me DOG” Maybe I may throw some Waka Flocka for them to turn up the tension.
Good sound track probably would make the game a little more physical too.
DJ BIG ROB not only holds the club down he has his own show every Saturday on 93.7 WBLK(6-10pm), he is Red Bulls Three Style 2013 Champion, guess DJ on WBNY 91.3 and on Sunday nights he holds down 1fm Jamz with the Sunday night fix (8-10pm).
