Cam Newton has broken the record for the most passing yards ever by a rookie in NFL history, breaking the mark set by future Hall-of-Famer Peyton Manning on the first drive of the second last game of the season.
Manning set the record in his rookie season in 1998 with 3,739. Newton, the number one overall pick in the NFL draft last April, was believed to have all the potential in the world, but was considered to need time to work on his NFL passing skills. He proved everyone wrong, starting the season with two 400 yard passing games, and not looking back since.
Newton entered this week with 17 passing TDs and another 13 rushing TDs with 609 rushing yards. With his combination of passing skills, exceeding even Manning in his rookie year, along with his athletic ability and running ability, Newton has the potential to become one of the all-time greats. Carolina needs to put a few more weapons around him, and he needs to continue to mature and improve, but he’s already exceeded anyone’s expectations over his first 15 games.
