The Denver Broncos shocked people when they chose to wear their white uniforms in Super Bowl 50. In even numbered years, the AFC is designated as the home team which gives them the power to choose which uniform their team will be wearing. For John Elway and Gary Kubiak, the decision was an easy one– Broncos’ orange uniforms lose in Super Bowls and they lose BIG.
While clad in orange jerseys, the Broncos have combined for a 129 point deficit to their competitors. In Super Bowl XII, Broncos lost to the Dallas Cowboys 27-10. San Francisco defeated Denver 55-10 in Super Bowl XXIV– the largest blowout in Super Bowl history. Broncos fell 42-10 to the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl XXII while again wearing their orange jerseys. The third largest mauling in Super Bowl history came in Super Bowl XLVII when the Seattle Seahawks topped the Denver Broncos 43-8.
“We’ve had Super Bowl success in our white uniforms, and we’re looking forward to wearing them again in Super Bowl 50,” said John Elway.
That success came in Super Bowl XXXIII when Elway led the Broncos to a 34-19 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. In his final NFL game, Elway donned the Broncos’ white jersey and earned himself a Super Bowl MVP with 336 passing yards, one touch down, and one rushing touchdown.
For an Organization that is steeped in franchise history– a head coach and a GM who were both former Broncos quarterbacks. They would love to see another Hall of Fame quarterback–playing
possibly in his last rodeo– don the Broncos white jersey as they hoist the Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl 50.
