Bears Bench Hanie, McNown to Start

Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith has announced that he will replace Caleb Hanie with Josh McNown this week, according to NBC Sports.  The bad news for McNown is that his first start comes against the Green Bay Packers, who still need a win to lock up home field advantage and are coming off their only loss of the season.

The change isn’t surprising.  The Bears are still mathematically in the hunt for a Wild Card spot, and need to win out to even have a chance and Hanie has been… ineffective in relief of Jay Cutler.

Ineffective is about the kindest thing to say about Hanie’s performance.  The Bears were 7-3 when Cutler went down, and have gone 0-4 under Hanie.  He has completed 50 percent of his passes for 153 yards per game with 3 TDs and 9 INTs during his run, for a passer rating of 41.8.
