St. Louis Rams veteran cornerback Al Harris announced his retirement after 14 years in the league. The former sixth round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has had a stellar career, including 2 Pro Bowl appearances and one Super Bowl ring, with the Packers.
Harris tore the ACL in his right knee in November, against the Cleveland Browns. “As far as playing, I think that was my last play,” Harris said this week. “I just planted wrong. That’s just God’s way of telling me it’s time for me to turn the page.”
He was with the Packers for most of last season, suffering through knee injuries, and was waived in November. Although he wasn’t with the Packers at the end of the season, the Packers elected to give him a Super Bowl ring for his contributions earlier in the season.
He was picked up by the Miami Dolphins near the end of last season and played in three games for them before another injury ended his season, and his time in Miami. He was signed by the Rams in the offseason and played in nine games this season.
“I had an awesome time,” he said. “I thank God for Spags [coach Steve Spagnuolo] giving me the opportunity to come out, and I hope I left a positive impression on everybody.”
Harris played with the Eagles as well as the Packers, Dolphins and Rams, but he spent 8 years in Green Bay and 5 in Philly.
He recorded a total of 423 tackles and 21 interceptions in his career. Now 37, Harris plans to go into coaching. “This is what I love to do. That’s what I am going to come back to do … coach. I have my mind made up on that.”
“Professionally, I think I hit every single goal I set out for myself, so now it’s time to turn the page and set a new set of goals.”
