The historical Candlestick Park, the home of the 49ers since 1971 and five Super Bowl championships, will be demolished at the end of the 49ers 2013 season.
In a report by NFL.com, the legendary ballpark, essentially a piece of the history of San Francisco itself, will be taken down when the 49ers make the move to their new stadium in Santa Clara. Guess what they will put in its place?
The quintessential American staple: a shopping mall.
This is a really, really sad story. A stadium with that much history should not just be blown up just like that. It should, I don’t know, be turned into a museum or something. Quite possibly the NFL’s most famous play, The Catch (Joe Montana’s game winning pass to Dwight Clark to defeat the bitter rival Dallas Cowboys) happened right there!
It’s not like the stadium is an eyesore either. Anyone driving up Highway 101 from SFO airport gets a great, unobstructed view of the ballpark. It’s one of those things on the family vacation where the dad, driving the rental car, points out right side of the car at Candlestick and says,
“Kids! Look! That’s Candlestick Park! Some of the greatest players to ever play the game started their careers there! Joe Montana, Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Colin Kaepernick (hopefully! Haha)”
