Most Charger fans have a very love/hate relationship with number 24. When he’s healthy, we love him. Can’t get enough! He’s explosive, has great speed, and can usually keep a decent grip on the ball…
On the other hand, if he isn’t out with a broken collarbone or ankle problems, then he’s having slip-ups off the field, like losing control of his BMW while driving too fast. Let’s also not forget failing the conditioning test after the lockout.
Regardless of his performance on the field, there’s no denying a strong character off the field. Here are 10 things you should know about Ryan Mathews.
1- He has overcome tremendous obstacles to get to where he is now. How many pros can you name from BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA?! Assuming you know Joey Porter and David Carr, you’d be able to count on one hand when you include Mathews (and even Derek Carr who plays for Fresno State). Bakersfield isn’t exactly a breeding ground for high school talent so it’s rare for colleges to pick up players from the 661.
2- During his senior year of high school, he not only ran for 3,396 yards, but he played quarterback as well. He threw for 851 yards. Mathews led the state and nation in rushing and also led the state in scoring with 44 touchdowns. He did this, all while turning around a less than desirable GPA in order to get into college.
3- When he’s not on the field, you can catch him snowboarding or doing other extreme sports like wakeboarding or surfing.
4- His mom is his best friend and she’s has never missed one of his games. The first thing he did after being drafted was buy her the car of her dreams.
5- They do charity work together. The Trish and Ryan Mathews Door of Hope Chest is a prime example. Check out the video below:
6- Ryan’s tattoos are done by a local artist in his hometown. Every single one. All done by the same guy. Pretty sweet!
7- He’s not the only Ryan Mathews in sports, a current Oakland Athletic’s draftee and former North Carolina State baseball player shares the same name, spelling and all.
8- His idol growing up was LaDainian Tomlinson, and he wore 21 through high school and two years of college. When he was drafted in 2009, he took LT’s place on the Charger’s RB depth chart because that’s the year LT retired.
9- Even though the official roster says he’s 6 feet tall, he’s definitely way closer to 5’10” on a good day…
