Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook called it a career on Wednesday after signing a one day contract with the team.
Westbrook played his first eight seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he rushed for 5,995 yards. Then in 2009 things came to a screeching halt as in week seven Westbrook suffered a concussion and yet another one in week 10.
That one would ultimately end his career with the Eagles as he was released by the team on March 5th, 2010.
Later that year Westbrook signed a one year contract with the San Francisco 49ers where in 14 games he rushed for 340 yards and four touchdowns. However, after the season the 49ers didn’t re-sign Westbrook, nor did any team as he didn’t play at all in 2011.
Westbrook decision to sign a one day contract and retire as an Eagle is a sign of appreciation to the former running back.
“It’s very important,” Westbrook said. “I went out to San Francisco and you hear so many guys before me say it, that the Eagles is the best organization in the NFL. When you hear it, you’re like, ‘Okay, yeah, yeah. I believe you.’”
“But when you go somewhere else, you actually see that this is the best organization in the NFL, the best coaching staff and I mean that,” Westbrook continued. “I’m not just saying it. I’ve been on the other side and I’ve seen how things are done differently and just the way that Coach Reid, Mr. Lurie, Mrs. Lurie handle things here, provide for the players, is special. I’m just really appreciative and humbled by the experience here.”
