The Seattle Seahawks have signed cornerback Cary Williams, the club announced today.
Williams was originally drafted by the Tennessee Titans with the 22nd pick in the seventh round (229th overall) in the 2008 NFL Draft. The Baltimore Ravens signed Williams off the Titans’ practice squad on November 24, 2009, and he became a starter in 2011 and 2012 – posting career-highs in tackles (78) in 2011 and interceptions (four) in 2012. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles on March 14, 2013, where he started 33 games in two seasons, including playoffs. He had 67 tackles and three interceptions in 2013 and 60 tackles and two interceptions in 2014. He was released on March 3.
In his career, Williams has 306 tackles, nine interceptions and 58 passes defensed. Over the past four seasons, he has averaged 70 tackles, 2.3 interceptions and 14.3 passes defensed.
Williams was coveted by a few teams in free agency including the Tennessee Titans, New York Jets, and the Baltimore Ravens. He will be replacing Byron Maxwell who signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. The deal is reported to be for three years and worth a total of $18 million, including seven million the 1st year. At 6’1 Williams fits the mold that the Seahawks like in the size of their cornerbacks. He will likely have the inside track on starting opposite Richard Sherman.
