Peters’ Season and Career in Jeopardy

Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Jason Peters ruptured his Achilles tendon while training near his home in Texas. According to CSNPhilly, one doctor has stated not only is Peter’s season in doubt his career is as well.

According to Dr. Mark Schwartz, who is the co-director of Virtua Hospital’s sports medicine program, stated that in a study of National Football League Players who have suffered this type of injury one third never return to the field.

“They’ve done some good studies on this particular injury in the NFL and the sad part is only two-thirds of NFL players sustaining Achilles’ tendon ruptures actually got back into the game, so one-third of NFL players who sustain this type of injury were not able to return back,” Dr. Schwartz stated.

For Eagle fans, that isn’t the only bad news, since the two thirds of players that do return do so at a lower level of performance. The reason for that is the injury decreases a player ability to explode out of their stance, which is vital to a NFL player’s performance.

“Of those who did return back, the average length of recovery was almost 11 months prior to returning, with a [minimum] of seven months … and unfortunately those who did get back, there was a decrease … in their ability to perform on the field,” Dr. Schwartz said.

That mean if Peters does return to the field it won’t be until November at the earliest, likely with a diminished level of performance.
