For the second time this season, Matt Stafford and the Detroit Lions snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. On opening day, Stafford lead the Lions down the field in the last minute to stun the Rams. Today, Stafford and the Lions erased a 10 point fourth quarter deficit and won the game in overtime to stun the Eagles.
Michael Vick connected with Jeremy Maclin for a 70 yard touchdown to give the Eagles a 23-13 lead with only 5:18 left in the fourth quarter.
The Lions didn’t quit. Stafford quickly lead the team down the field and found Nate Burleson in the endzone to cut the Eagles lead to three with just over three minutes remaining. The Lions defense stepped up after Burleson’s touchdown and forced the Eagles to a quick three and out. Stafford lead the Lions all the way to the Eagles 1 yard line but couldn’t score a touchdown to win in regulation. Instead, Jason Hanson tied the game at the gun with a 19 yard field goal.
In overtime, the Eagles got the ball first but again went three and out. The Lions got the ball at midfield and Stafford found Calvin Johnson at the Eagles 27 yard line to set up the winning field goal. Hanson was perfect from 45 yards and the Lions comeback was complete.
Next week, the Lions (2-3) will travel to Chicago to play the Bears on Monday Night Football and the Eagles (3-3) are on the bye.
